Bird Photography Weekly
A new backyard bird frequented our feeders during the deep freeze last week - the red-bellied woodpecker. While we occasionaly saw them in the nearby parks we had not had one in our yard at our feeders before. He spent so much time at the suet feeder that getting photos was easy and because school was cancelled due to the cold temperatures and windchill factor I was home to take full advantage of the photo opp.
The subzero temperatures increased our feeder activity in general. We were visited by dozens of goldfinches, juncos, house finches, and house sparrows. Thankfully it has warmed up over the last few days but it was back to work today. For more brilliant bird photos from all over the world check out Bird Photography Weekly.

Maybe what we need is a chill in the air. We aren't getting a wide variety at our feeders.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics of your Red-bellied!
Congratulations on getting a new (and beautiful) backyard bird.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of a beautiful bird - but I'm glad we don't get those kinds of temperatures here! (Eastern Australia)
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing like the flash of red on a sunny but cold winter day to warm the heart. Your shots are gorgeous. Love the feeder BTW, did you make it?
ReplyDeleteLovely shots. We have a similar suet log feeder and get Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers in addition to the Red-bellied.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots! I'm jealous that you can get them in your backyard, although I guess I can't complain much. I occasionally get to see red-bellieds and downies during my lunchbreaks at a neighborhood park near the office.
ReplyDeleteLove the photos don't like the cold that much though.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect set up. Home because of cold weather. Beautiful new birds hanging out at the feeder. All day to take it in. :)
